How did clip earrings survive in a world where piercing is rampant?
This question came to mind after a lady came in my shop and asked if I sold clip earrings. I don't (as of yet anyways) and I told her that I haven't thought about clip earrings since my mother was gone. My mom had pierced ears. Who ever had pierced them made the holes uneven and no one noticed because she always wore small earrings. Then the 80's came and everything was big. Big hair and big earrings. That is when mom switched to clip earrings. Of course, she had a stash of them from the good ol'days. Over the years it became my personal quest to find clipped earrings for my mom. They were hard to find and I found some of her favorites at garage sales. Once in a while I could find some in a dept. store and of course I would buy them and keep them to give to her for Christmas or her birthday. Sometimes I would just give them to her if the pickins had been slim for awhile.
All of this made me do a little research about clip earrings and earrings in general. Here is what I found. Earrings weren't popular for a long time. Fashion of course is the key factor here. When wigs were worn, they covered the ears. Then hats were popular and they often had wide ribbons to tie under the chin and therefore covered the ears.
